Four Cuban Hot Sauces and a Bag of Chifles Tostones in One Box

The Chifles Tostones Tasting Kit is the full Barbaro Mojo lineup, minus the extreme one, plus the plantain chips we actually eat with it. Four 5 oz bottles cover the heat range from mild to hot, and a 4 oz bag of Chifles Original Tostones gives you something crunchy to dip the minute the box opens. It is the kit we hand people who ask "which one should I try first?" because the answer is all of them.

What is in the box

  • Jalabáo (heat 3 of 10): jalapeño and green bell pepper. Mild, bright, the everyday bottle.
  • Piñazo (heat 6 of 10): pineapple and Carolina Reaper. Sweet first, then the heat shows up.
  • Best Day Ever (heat 8 of 10): mango and habanero with a little Reaper. Fruity and hot.
  • El Havanero (heat 9 of 10): habanero and tomato. The hottest of the everyday line.
  • Chifles Original Tostones, 4 oz: thick-cut green plantain chips from a Miami family company that started in Tampa in 1963. Gluten-free, kosher, and built for dipping.

Heat ratings use the Barbaro Mojo Cuban heat scale (1 to 10). Matanza, our 10, is not in this kit; find it in the Only Hot 4-Pack.

What all four sauces have in common

Every bottle starts with a citrus and garlic mojo criollo base, the marinade Cuban kitchens use on pork and yuca, so the sauces taste like food, not vinegar. Heat comes from real peppers, never extracts. All four are gluten-free and vegan, with no high-fructose corn syrup and no MSG. The mojo base carries small amounts of food-safe preservatives (potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate); Piñazo uses a pineapple-juice mojo base and has none. Everything is hand-bottled in small batches in Miami, and between them the four sauces have taken honors at the Scovie Awards, the Fiery Food Challenge, and the International Flavor Awards, including a Scovie Grand Prize for product packaging (Piñazo). The full list is on the awards page.

How to use the kit

  • Open the tostones, line up the four bottles mild to hot, and taste in order. That is the whole tasting flight.
  • Jalabáo on eggs, avocado, and grilled fish. Piñazo on pork, shrimp, and tacos. Best Day Ever on chicken wings and rice bowls. El Havanero on steak, lechón, and anything that needs waking up.
  • Mix a spoonful of any sauce into mayo or sour cream for a two-minute dip for the chips.
